We're investing over $619 million to upgrade and expand Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital (QEII). The upgrades include:
- a new 5 level clinical services building
- more beds and medical wards
- expanded surgery and intensive care units
- expanded support services, such as pharmacy, pathology and kitchen
- new central sterile supply department
- renovations to our existing hospital buildings.
The upgrades will modernise our hospital and provide more health care services to our growing community. Building started in 2023 and some upgrades are already finished. We expect all upgraded services and new buildings to be completed by 2027.
Changes at QEII Hospital – what you need to know
If you are visiting the QEII Hospital in the coming months, you will notice some changes around our campus. These changes may include:
- construction noise
- changes to hospital entry and exit points
- changes to traffic flow and parking.
To avoid delays, we suggest allowing extra time for your trip to the hospital. If possible, consider using public transport as an alternative to driving.
Please follow any safety signs and instructions from traffic controllers or construction workers.
The health and safety of our community, patients, visitors and staff are our top priority during construction. We want you and your family to feel welcome and comfortable during your visit. Why we’re expanding
We’re prioritising our upgrades to make sure we continue to provide high quality care to our growing community.
The upgrades will also help us care for our ageing population and meet the growing demand for surgery in the Brisbane southside area.
The upgrades are part of the Queensland Health and Hospitals Plan. We've planned them based on:
- our medical and clinical health service needs
- information about our population and expected growth
- feedback and consultation with our local Traditional Owners, staff, patients, community and other stakeholders
- advice from builders, engineers and design experts.
What we’re building
We’re upgrading our buildings and health services in stages.
New 5 level clinical services building
Our new 5 level medical building will help us provide more health services to our community.
It'll have:
- 112 new inpatient beds
- upgraded surgery facilities
- more intensive care and acute treatment spaces
- new and expanded support services.
New 28 bed ward and allied health facilities
We’ve opened our new $25 million specialist medical ward that helped us quickly increase our capacity and provide more patient beds.
We've also opened a new outpatient allied health and ambulatory care services building which includes:
- physical therapy spaces and a gym
- consultation rooms
- support and administrative spaces.
New multi-level car park
Our new $127 million car park will have 1,379 car parks to provide easier and more secure parking for patients, visitors and staff. The 8 level car park will boost parking ahead of the new clinical services building in 2027.

Mid 2023: Design of new clinical building started

Get involved
We're working with people and groups from our community to help plan the upgrades and get feedback including:
- design user groups to help us co-design our clinical and public spaces with architects and clinicians
- meetings about the look and design of the upgrades and wayfinding
- training and work experience opportunities for local school students.
We also worked with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and Traditional Owners to make sure the upgrades are culturally safe.
