Arriving at hospital

  • To get to our main hospital building, use the Ipswich Road entrance.
  • For our emergency department, use the Cornwall Street entrance.
  • For emergency and after-hours admissions between 8:30 pm and 5:30 am, use the emergency department entrance.

All our entrances are accessible by wheelchair, including levels 1 and 2 through the Cornwall Street entrance.

Pick up and drop off

We have 2 pick up and drop off areas outside the main building. You can get to them through the Ipswich Road or Cornwall Street entrances. You can only stop here for a few minutes.

How to get here

Princess Alexandra Hospital is a tertiary healthcare center providing care in all major medical specialties, with the exception of obstetrics. We are a world-class medical research precinct. Whatever the reason for your visit, we want to ensure you find your destination.

The hospital is located at 199 Ipswich Road, Woolloongabba, a 10-minute drive south of Brisbane CBD. There are two main entrances to the hospital. The main entrance is off Ipswich Road, and the emergency department has its own entrance off Cornwall Street. Alternative wheelchair access points are available at the Cornwall Street entrance and the main hospital buildings.

On the hospital campus, there are smaller buildings, each clearly named and numbered. You can reach the hospital by car or public transport. If coming by road, follow the directions based on your direction of travel on the Pacific Motorway.

For drop-offs, there are two designated areas for the main hospital building. One is outside the main foyer off Ipswich Road, and the other is outside the emergency department off Cornwall Street, for emergency patient drop-off or pickup. Short-term parking for pick-up and drop-off is available outside the Transit Care Hub.

Two privately operated car parks are close to Princess Alexandra Hospital: the Metro Multi-story Car Park and the PA Parking Multi-story Car Park. Follow the signs to reach these car parks and use the electronic pay stations before exiting.

Brisbane City Council parking restrictions apply in surrounding streets, so be mindful of parking limits.

The hospital is serviced by multiple bus routes, with the PA Hospital Busway Station a short walk away. Buses also stop on Ipswich Road at PA Hospital Stop 14. Train travelers can connect to a bus at Roma Street Station, taking Route 66 to the PA Hospital Busway Station. Dutton Park Station is a short walk down Cornwall Street to the hospital.

For patients and visitors, there's a shuttle bus running regularly between Ipswich Road and the main hospital building. The bus is wheelchair accessible, with volunteers on hand to assist passengers.

Once you've reached the hospital, finding your way is straightforward. To the left of the main entrance, you'll find the reception area where staff and volunteers will provide directions.

The hospital is divided into two main sections: the Orange Side and the Blue Side. Signs for each ward are color-coded orange or blue. Follow the signs on the ground floor to the orange or blue lifts, and each ward's name reflects the level it's on.

If you're here for an outpatient appointment, check your appointment letter for the location. Arrive 15 minutes early, check in with reception, present your Medicare card and any concession cards, and after your appointment, check out at reception.

We hope you find your way easily at Princess Alexandra Hospital. If you need assistance, our volunteers and staff are here to help at every step of the way.
