Redland Hospital Colonoscopy and Endoscopy re-screening

8 January 2020

In September 2018 Metro South Hospital and Health Service identified concerns about the thoroughness of endoscopy and colonoscopy procedures undertaken by an individual doctor at Redland Hospital.

These are procedures that allow doctors to detect and potentially treat early bowel or upper gastrointestinal issues before they develop further.

Patient safety continues to be our first priority, ensuring those affected are offered appropriate care.

While there’s no suggestion that any direct harm was caused at the time of the original procedure, it appears this doctor may have missed early clinical signs of disease during some of these endoscopies and colonoscopies.

Upon learning this, Metro South immediately suspended the doctor from undertaking these procedures and referred the matter to the Office of the Health Ombudsman who referred the matter to AHPRA, the national regulator.

Metro South has since assessed records for all patients who have had these procedures by this doctor between 2012 to 2018 identifying about 1500 patients.

Patients who were identified as high risk have already had their repeat procedures performed by different clinicians.

Including the high risk patients, 450 people have already had a repeat procedure, and of these, 14 patients were found to have early interval or missed cancers and others with unexpected significant pathology.

Metro South continues to work hard to ensure that our patients receive the highest standards of care. We have an ongoing commitment to safety and quality for all consumers, carers and the broader community.

We are currently contacting the rest of our patients and recommending a repeat screening procedure. The bulk of these re-screenings should be complete by March.

This will not impact existing patients or services.

Metro South will undertake a Health Service Investigation into this issue. Further information will be made public once that investigation is complete.

If you are potentially affected, you will be contacted by Queensland Health and if you have any concerns then contact Redland hospital on 3488 3111.
