PAH welcomes new MAPU Director

Princess Alexandra Hospital’s (PAH) new Medical Assessment and Planning Unit (MAPU) Director crossed three states and one territory to take on the new role after falling in love with PAH several years ago.

After spending 20 years at the Royal Hobart Hospital in Tasmania, Dr Nicole Hancock made the move to Queensland this year to experience a new work culture and digital hospital environment.

“While working on a project I had the opportunity to visit PAH and meet with Emergency Department  staff and see the work and research  PAH was doing  in regards to wait times and the patient journey,” she said. 

“I was really interested in some of the achievements PAH had made and thought it was an organisation I’d enjoy being part of.”

But, when a job became available at the right time, it was a volunteer named Helen who helped seal the deal.

“On the day of my interview I went for a walk in the morning and ended up at the hospital in my gym gear. One of the volunteers, her name was Helen, looked at me and said good morning welcome to the Princess Alexandra Hospital and that was a pivotal point for me,” she said.

“They talk about culture hitting you when you walk in the front door, and to get that kind greeting was lovely.

“Later, when I returned in my corporate clothes I received the same warm welcome by a different volunteer—it didn’t matter who you were or what you were wearing, everyone deserved a hello.”

Dr Hancock said she intended to embrace and exhibit the same positive work culture in her own role.

“I’ve joined a dedicated multidisciplinary team who care greatly about their patients,” she said.

“I’m keen to be at the coalface with them, and to be listening, watching, asking questions and meeting with people before suggesting any changes.”

Dr Hancock said she hoped to start a MAPU leadership team that would bring together all the different disciplines.

“I’d like to help foster an inclusive model of leadership where the whole healthcare team come together and move towards a shared goal,” she said.

“And that’s all about improving the patient journey.”

Outside of work, Dr Hancock said she and her family were looking forward to exploring Queensland.
