New space for CYMHS Acute Response Team

29 September 2021

An important new consultation space inside the Logan Hospital Children's Emergency Department will ensure the CYMHS (Children and Youth Mental Health Service) Acute Response Team can continue to provide vital care to young people experiencing mental health issues.

CYMHS Acute Response Team Team Leader Ryan Zeppa-Cohen said this new dedicated space was a testament to the fantastic working relationship between the Paediatric ED and CYMHS Acute Response Team (ART).

"The CYMHS ART works across both Logan and Redland Hospitals and was developed in response to the ever-increasing number of young people presenting to ED with mental health concerns," Ryan said.

He said the team had provided care to between 120 and 150 children and young people every month since it began operating in January this year.

"Most months have seen the number of young people we are providing care to triple when compared to 2018/2019 numbers so we have moved to provide a streamlined ED assessment for them and their families/carers at both hospitals.

"We take a whole of family approach and we have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the young people and families we have seen."

Ryan said the team was also able to provide short-term support and follow-up where clinically indicated and provide brief interventions and assistance with engaging NGOs, GPs and private psychologists.

"It's also important we give the young person and their family/carers a central point of contact after an ED presentation for additional guidance and support.
"This space allows us to undertake assessments and have discussions with the young person, their families or carers in a quiet and private area which is fantastic."

Ryan said the service currently operated at both Logan and Redland hospitals from Monday to Friday, 7am to 9pm.
