Fun Shirt Friday takes off at QEII

13 August 2020

Michael and Christopher Erian of QEII’s Juniors Doctors Society are not shy about flashing loud prints in the workplace. The twin doctors coordinate Fun shirt Friday for staff, an initiative that encourages medical professionals to take themselves just a little less seriously once a week in the name mental health awareness.

Every Friday QEII clinicians are encouraged to wear their best Hawaiian shirt and upload their kitsch fashion statements to a dedicated Facebook page where people can vote for their favourite shirt. The prize? Free coffee for the winner.

The brothers said they started the initiative at QEII to spread an important message within their clinical cohort.

“Doctors and Allied Health professionals have stressful jobs, particularly now with COVID-19, and that can take a toll on one’s mental health, so we use this initiative to raise awareness of that. Fun Shirt Friday may seem frivolous but it’s really about creating a supportive hospital culture,” Michael said.

“It started as a JDS initiative for all Junior Doctors in the hospital but since then it has broadened out to doctors at all levels and other staff are now involved.

“It certainly helps brighten people’s day, especially on the wards where it’s a great ice breaker to discuss how ugly your shirt is with the patients!” Chris said.
