First look at QEII Hospital new Clinical Services Building

8 April 2024

Even more healthcare services are in sight with construction to commence on the $465 million QEII Hospital Expansion in the coming months.

The project will deliver a new five-storey clinical building on campus which is expected to be delivered by 2027.

The new building will increase surgical capacity and expansion of key support services to QEII including:

  • 112 overnight beds, including a 7 additional Intensive Care Unit beds
  • additional operating theatre capacity
  • refurbishment of clinical support and operational service support areas in the existing main hospital building.

The expansion comes following the delivery of two additional 28-bed inpatient wards in 2022 and 2023, with works continuing on additional infrastructure for allied health and outpatients departments.

Metro South Health Chief Executive, Noelle Cridland said the extra beds will make a huge difference for patients and the dedicated team at QEII Hospital.

“The Capital Expansion program will significantly boost capacity at the hospital, allowing Brisbane southside residents to receive the best healthcare close to home.

“It will also go a long way in helping to ease pressure on the busy emergency department, which treated almost 65,000 patients last year,” Noelle said.

“In addition to the new beds, the project will deliver a range of critical supporting infrastructure including additional treatment spaces and increased surgical and Intensive Care Unit capacity which has been an important part of the vision for QEII Hospital into the future.”

The new building is an exciting development for QEII and the most significant build on campus since the expansion of the Emergency Department and Endoscopy footprint in 2013.

The projects are part of the government’s Big Hospital Build, which will provide an almost 2,200 bed boost to Queensland’s hospital system and is the biggest capital investment in health in Queensland’s history.
