Digital integration at PA Hospital is improving more than just equipment tracking – it is also improving efficiency of patient treatment.
Our Central Clinical Resource Unit (CCRU) deliver 5800 pieces of equipment out to wards and clinics across PA Hospital every day which increases efficiency by reducing the amount of redundant equipment and improves the safety of that equipment through regular servicing.
As part of the Digital Hospital program, the team have implemented new technology to improve equipment tracking and streamline delivery of equipment requested through the CARPS delivery system.
Business Support Manager for CCRU, Michele Nitchie sourced wireless barcode scanners to use in conjunction with smart devices enabling the staff to barcode equipment locations within the wards on routine rounds.
An App was developed to allow use of a keyboard while being connected to the PAH wi-fi. Combined with the self-allocation of tasks by the staff while they are out and about, the technology means the team can continue working rather than returning to a PC to check for new requests.
“The aim was efficiency and it certainly delivers that,” said Michele. “The innovation saves around two hours each day for our seven staff, Monday to Friday, plus the weekend staff. This is about 78 hours per week that we gain to increase the speed of delivery for requested equipment to the ward, plus more time for testing and maintaining the quality of the equipment.”
PA Hospital will become one of the first fully digital hospitals in Queensland towards the end of 2015.
