Dental Health Week

17 August 2023

Last week, oral health teams across Metro South Oral Health Services celebrated Dental Health Week.

The goal of this year's Dental Health Week campaign was to emphasise the significance of taking measures to care for both teeth and gums in order to help people preserve their teeth and continue to smile for a lifetime.

The relationship between the mouth and the entire body was the emphasis of Dental Health Week this year.

Evidence indicates there are links between diseases in the mouth and diseases in the body.

This year Dental Health Week highlighted that bacteria in the mouth can travel to different sites of the body and inflammation in the mouth can increase the body’s overall risk of inflammation and disease.

Dental Health Week looked at Heart Disease, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s Disease, Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes, Lung Conditions and inflammatory Bowel Disease and the risk poor oral health can have on these common diseases.

Information regarding oral health eligibility can be found at Eligibility | Oral Health | Metro South Health.
