Construction tenders awarded for major expansions of Logan and Princess Alexandra hospitals

9 May 2023

John Holland has been awarded the tenders to deliver the Logan Hospital Stage 2 Expansion Project and the Princess Alexandra Hospital Expansion.

The two expansion projects total $880 million and will provide an additional 361 hospital beds.

These are the first two major expansion projects in the Queensland Health and Hospitals Plan to have the tender awarded.

The $530 million Logan Hospital Stage 2 Expansion will deliver 112 additional beds.

This is in addition to the current investment of $460 million for the Stage 1 major expansion that will provide an additional 206 beds and is currently being delivered by John Holland.

The $350 million Princess Alexandra Hospital major expansion will see an additional 249 beds created through refurbishment and construction above the existing Emergency Department.

The expansion will include more intensive care beds and more high dependency beds, which means greater access to acute care and intensive care services.

It will also create 854 jobs during the construction phase, while the Logan Stage 2 expansion will generate an additional 1290 construction jobs.

Both projects are expected to be completed in the second half of 2026.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Yvette D’Ath said the announcement was a real win for existing locals and the families who would eventually call the region home in the years to come.

“John Holland has been a key partner in the delivery of large health capital infrastructure projects since 2018, and already has a track record with Logan Stage 1,” Minister D’Ath said.

John Holland Executive General Manager Building David Lehmann said John Holland was proud to build on its strong partnership with the Queensland Government to expand two of Brisbane’s largest and relied-upon hospitals – the Logan and Princess Alexandra Hospitals.

“We are already delivering Stage 1 of the Logan Hospital expansion, and now we will leverage our experience and capabilities into Stage 2 alongside the new project of the PA Hospital expansion.

“We know how important modern health facilities are to local communities – and being involved in large-scale healthcare projects such as these put our purpose of transforming lives into practice.”

Health infrastructure projects currently being delivered by the Palaszczuk Government in Metro South region include:

  • Logan Hospital – $460 million Stage 1 Expansion that will provide 206 additional beds, $20 million rapid expansion modular ward with 28 new beds, and $18.8 million maternity refurbishment project. (In addition, the $61.9 million eight-level car park opened last year.)
