Ceremonial blessing for next project in QEII Hospital Expansion Program

13 September 2023

QEII staff, executives and community members gathered on-site to celebrate the commencement of site works on the hospital’s modular Allied Health and Ambulatory Care building on 7 September.

The team was joined by Aunty Beryl, Quandamooka woman and Inala elder and the Nunukul Yuggera Aboriginal Dance Company, who delivered a traditional Smoking Ceremony to cleanse the land and create positive energy on site before construction commences.

The purpose-built facility will boast a new gym and therapy spaces, consultation and interview rooms, and staff office spaces to support outpatient allied health and ambulatory patients across QEII.

QEII Hospital Executive Director Anne Coccetti says the new buildings will provide a fresh and fully equipped environment for staff and patients, while enhancing access for patients attending allied health outpatient appointments.

“We are excited to continue growing our patient care offerings at QEII with new amenities and services to support our region’s growing population,” she said.

Anne says the move of allied health functions enabled a brand new 28-bed inpatient beds to be constructed within the main hospital building and improve patient flow and access to clinical infrastructure for those services.

“This building is the next part of the journey of expanding QEII and I thank you all for your continued patience as we grow as a health care service.”

The works form part of the Queensland Government’s larger Accelerated Infrastructure Delivery Program, and is expected to open its doors in late November 2023.
