Cathy Ellis celebrates ruby anniversary at QEII

29 October 2020

Cathy Ellis has clocked up 40 years at QEII Hospital and she says she is still learning.

Starting her career in administration at QEII in 1980, Cathy said it was the start of a bond she has felt with the hospital that has endured alongside her love of working with the amazing QEII team.

“I live in this community, my family are connected to organisations in this community, and I have grown with this facility,” she says remembering back on maternity and ICU in the bygone 80’s. “I’m so lucky to be working with this amazing team who have such an appreciation for what everyone contributes to QEII.

“Every small thing that you do in your job is important and contributes to keeping the machine of QEII running.”

Cathy said the most significant change over her 40 years has definitely been technology but also things like the amount of ‘paperwork’ and checklists that are required now for so many aspects of patient care and employment.

“I also remember back to the time we had the sunken lounge in the QEII staff area – very ‘70’s and very smoky! But of course one of the most visual differences at QEII now is the multicultural staff we have and we are so proud of this part of our reputation which is reflective of the community we serve.

“Over my 40 years, I have been here to see many people transition away to different jobs and different hospitals, but I’m always interested to see them come back and call QEII home."
