A pinkie promise to her granddaughter and support from QEII Hospital has inspired 58-year-old Gaylene Jones to quit smoking. A former pack-a-day smoker, Gaylene tried to quit 10 times over the past 15 years but kept failing due to a lack of support and motivation.
QEII Hospital staff rolled up their sleeves this week to help ensure the blood supply never runs dry. Red Cross Community Relations Officer Wes Thomas said more than 50 lives would be saved from the donations made.

The dedicated nurse of 14 years took out this year's QEII Hospital Nurse of the Year Award for her compassionate work treating patients with dementia and other medical illnesses.
