International medical graduates

At Logan Hospital, we welcome applications from experienced international medical graduates (IMGs).

Our Medical Workforce Unit is here to assist with every step of the way, including support for:

  • AHPRA registration applications
  • visa applications
  • pre-employment screening
  • relocation
  • and any other miscellaneous questions they may have.

Requirements to practise

You will be required to meet the following requirements relevant to your pathway:

Specialist pathway (for Senior Medical Officer or Staff Specialist roles)

The Specialist pathway has the following requirements:

  1. Apply to the Australian Medical Council for primary source verification
  2. Recency of Practice as per the Medical Board of Australia advice
  3. Provide a comparability assessment from a specialist medical college if employed as a staff specialist, specialist general practitioner or recognised advanced practitioner.
  4. Be eligible for provisional registration with a minimum of level 2 supervision with the Medical Board of Australia, supported by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Competent Authority Pathway (PGY3 and up)

The Competent Authority pathway has the following requirements:

  1. Australian Medical Council certificate
  2. PGY2/FY2 years completed
  3. Recency of Practice as per the Medical Board of Australia advice
  4. Be eligible for provisional registration with a minimum of level 2 supervision with the Medical Board of Australia, supported by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

The approved competent authorities are:

  • General Medical Council (United Kingdom - for the PLAB examination or for graduates of GMC-accredited medical courses in the United Kingdom) 
  • Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) 
  • Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates of the United States (USMLE) 
  • Medical Council of New Zealand (NZREX) 
  • Medical Council of Ireland (graduates of medical courses in Ireland accredited by the Medical Council of Ireland).
  • National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (COMLEX-USA)

Standard Pathway (PGY1 and up who are not eligible under the Competent Authority Pathway)

The Standard pathway has the following requirements:

  1. Australian Medical Council examination part 1 (multi-choice questionnaire), AND
  2. Australian Medical Council examination part 2 (clinical), AND
  3. Recency of Practice as per the Medical Board of Australia advice, AND
  4. Be eligible for provisional registration with a minimum of level 2 supervision with the Medical Board of Australia, supported by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
