Princess Alexandra Hospital intern recruitment

About us

The PAH is a tertiary referral and teaching hospital, providing comprehensive services to South East Queensland. The PAH is a 1,054-bed hospital located 4kms from the CBD in Woolloongabba. It provides a full range of adult specialty services (excluding O&G). Innovation is part of our DNA and in November 2015, the PAH became Australia's first large-scale digital hospital.

As a major trauma centre, there is a retrieval service with a helipad located on the roof of the hospital building that incorporates a high-speed lift which travels directly into a resus room. The PAH is the major centre for liver and kidney transplantation and is also home to state-wide services such as the melanoma and sarcoma service.

It is nationally recognised for its expertise in digital health and telehealth. There are strong links with the co-located research facility, the Translational Research Institute (TRI), as well as collaborations with The University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology. The PAH is a popular choice and is usually over-subscribed in the Queensland Health intern and RMO recruitment campaigns.

The PAH is a fantastic place to train, whether your interests lie in medical, surgical or critical care specialities.

Our facilities include:

  • Access to UpToDate and DynaMed
  • library with expertise to help with literature searches
  • good public transport access (Busway and Dutton Park Train Station)
  • cycle routes into the City
  • well-equipped gym on-site with discounted staff rates
  • Junior Doctor Society
  • Doctors' common room with locker facilities
  • undercover parking (fees apply)
  • shopping complex nearby with many food outlets
  • child care centre and parenting facilities
  • chapel and prayer room
  • Translational Research Institute on campus
  • staff cafeteria and several onsite options for good quality coffee.

Education and training

The Medical Education Unit focusses on providing support and assistance to Interns and House Officers at the PAH. The Unit has an open-door policy and junior doctors are encouraged to seek help and support from any of the staff. Some of the educational opportunities at the PAH include:

  • one four-hour Recognition and Management of the Deteriorating Patient for Surgical Interns workshop (for PAH interns completing their core surgical term onsite)
  • SLIM - Simulation Learning for Interns in Medicine. Hourly sessions for all PAH interns in a core medical term
  • buddied ward work experience prior to first ward call shift
  • excellent supervision and teaching in a broad range of disciplines
  • Medical and Surgical Ground Rounds each week
