Metro South Health undertook a project involving consumers, clinicians and GPs to implement the Choosing Wisely principles and recommendations across the health service. Choosing Wisely is an international initiative aimed at improving patient care by reducing and eliminating unnecessary, potentially harmful tests, treatments and procedures performed and prescribed.
With the complexity of tests, treatments, and procedures available to modern medicine, the challenge is that not all add value and can lead to more frequent and invasive investigations that can expose the consumer to undue risk of harm, emotional stress, or financial cost. Together, 37 medical Colleges and Societies across Australia have contributed over 170 recommendations to health practitioners.
The project has embedded the Choosing Wisely Australia® principles championing high-value healthcare into Metro South Health’s decision making and project evaluation processes. The project has also engaged with Metro South consumers, encouraging conversations about their own healthcare and utilising their experiences to determine priority areas within the health service. Local Primary Care clinicians are reminded of Choosing Wisely, with the ongoing inclusion of Choosing Wisely recommendations on the Metro South Health & Brisbane South PHN website SpotOnHealth HealthPathways.
As a member of Choosing Wisely Australia, Metro South Health will continue championing the initiative at a local level beyond the project’s life-cycle, by continuing to encourage the uptake of Choosing Wisely recommendations and value-based healthcare amongst clinicians, and promoting health literacy amongst consumers, in the community and within the health service.
