Geriatric Medicine

at Princess Alexandra Hospital

Geriatric Medicine is a specialty concerned with all aspects of health and illness in older people. It covers the clinical, social, psychological, preventive and rehabilitative aspects of health care.

Our teams of doctors, nurses and health practitioners aim to help patients achieve their optimal capabilities and independence and to enhance their quality of life. We foster an environment that promotes the dignity and rights of patients and their carers.

Princess Alexandra Hospital has a dedicated Geriatric and Rehabilitation Unit (GARU) which incorporates:

  • three inpatient wards (Banksia, Bunya and Cassia)
  • a geriatric day hospital
  • a consultation liaison service for patients in other departments within the hospital
  • a stroke unit
  • specialist clinics in geriatrics, cognition (memory) and continence.
