We are passionate about helping people living with diabetes, along with their families and carers.
We offer comprehensive care tailored to patients' individual circumstances and disease, with teams of health professionals including endocrinologists, diabetes nurse educators, dietitians and psychologists. The aim of our multidisciplinary approach is to provide comprehensive care and help patients to effectively self-manage their diabetes.
Princess Alexandra Hospital's Diabetes and Endocrinology Department provides tertiary level inpatient and outpatient clinical services, including consultancy to other units within the hospital.
We hold multidisciplinary clinics monthly with both neurosurgeons and breast/endocrine surgeons as well as an outreach service to Mt Isa and Cloncurry hospitals.
Initiatives the department has introduced include:
- nurse-led screening clinics designed to allowed for appropriate triage and education of referred patients
- the establishment of a rapid turnaround clinic focusing on intensive education to allow patients to adopt self-management principles.
The department is also closely aligned with the University of Queensland's Diamantina Institute, with many of the consultants and senior registrars holding roles in the education and training of clinicians, scientists and students.
