Health alert: Novel coronavirus (COVID-19)

Biostatistics Service

Data analysis and statistics can be a daunting part of the research process – particularly for novice researchers. The nature of the required data analysis will depend on the type of data that is collected as part of the research project. Biostatistics support is available to all Metro South Health employees through QFAB Bioinformatics.

This service is free of charge for the first 6 to 8 hours of statistical support per research project. QFAB recommends clinicians and researchers contact the Metro South Health Biostatistics Service before commencing a research grant application process and before seeking ethical clearance and research governance authorisation. This service is funded by the Metro South Health Study Research and Assistance Scheme (SERTA).

The Metro South Health Biostatistics Service is able to assist with the following topic areas:

  • Hypothesis definition
  • Literature review
  • Experimental design principles
  • Clinical experiments
  • Design constraints
  • Feasibility and pilot studies
  • Sample size or power calculations
  • Randomisation
  • Surveys and questionnaires
  • Data management
  • Statistical software
  • Data quality control
  • Summary graphs and stats
  • Testing for normality
  • Transformations
  • Testing for variance equivalence
  • Hypothesis testing
  • Statistical analysis
  • Epidemiology
  • Graphical Information Systems (GIS)

A resident biostatistician is available for consultations every weekday with waiting times ranging from a few days to a fortnight depending on current demand.

Additionally the Metro South Health Biostatistics Service holds biostatistics seminar series at least once a year.

The provider for this service is the Queensland Facility for Advanced Bioinformatics (QFAB), University of Queensland. Bookings and enquiries can be made directly on QFAB’s website via the Request statistics support page and the biostatistician can be contacted via email Please note: Fees may be applicable, following the first initial 6 to 8 hours of statistical support per research project. Please contact QFAB to discuss further.
