Addiction Services

at Woolloongabba Community Health Centre

The Addiction Services Academic Clinical Unit (ACU) provides a specialist service, within a harm minimisation policy with a no wrong door philosophy. Individuals directly or indirectly affected by their own or another's alcohol and/or drug use can access a comprehensive alcohol and drug assessment and a range of specialist interventions.

Conditions we treat

The following list identifies the most common conditions managed by the Addiction Services ACU:

  • substance use disorder
  • alcohol use
  • drug use
  • tobacco use
  • co-occurring alcohol and drug and mental health disorders.

Accessing our service

Anyone with a substance use issue or their family members and friends are eligible to access services for an assessment. Services provided are confidential and clients should contact the nearest service to discuss options available to them. Services provided by Addiction Services ACU are free of charge, excluding any costs associated with any prescribed medications.

The Addiction Services ACU is accessible through contact with the individual clinical teams:

In addition, clients may contact the 24 hour Alcohol and Drug telephone information service on (07) 3837 5989 which is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals who can provide confidential telephone counselling, information and referral for people with concerns about their own or someone else's alcohol and/or drug use.

Individuals can self refer to the Addiction Services ACU by phone or in person, or can be referred from other ACUs, services or agencies. On referral an intake form will be completed to gather personal demographics and relevant clinical information. This information will be discussed at a multidisciplinary team meeting on the next business day and will be allocated to an Addiction Services ACU clinician to follow up. Urgency is assessed at the time of referral. A referral to the service is not necessary - people can make an appointment either by phone or in person at a clinic.

Services we provide

The Addiction Service ACU provides:

  • counselling interventions
  • opiate replacement  services, including methadone and buprenorphine programs for individuals with opiate dependence (inclusive of therapeutic dependence)
  • a range of other medical interventions, including pharmacotherapies for alcohol and tobacco dependence
  • outpatient withdrawal services
  • consultation and liaison
  • information and education
  • relapse prevention
  • needle and syringe program - supply of equipment and brief interventions
  • Indigenous alcohol and drug outreach
  • prevention and community development
  • outreach clinics in a variety of locations, including Eight Mile Plains, Ellen Grove, Mt Gravatt, Wynnum, Beenleigh, Beaudesert, Stradbroke Island.

In addition, the following specialist services are provided:

Diversion programs

Police and court diversion programs operate from nominated services (Inala and Eight Mile Plains) within the Metro South Hospital and Health Service.

Homeless Outreach Team (inner city Brisbane)

This team provides intensive outreach support and interventions to primary and secondary homeless people with a focus on enhancing access to support and interventions. These interventions are provided through a consultative/liaison framework for community and government agencies to seek specialist advice on alcohol and drug interventions. The team works within an outreach model, which includes:

  • education and training for community and government agencies
  • activities focusing on health promotion
  • specialist advice on alcohol and drug interventions
  • client case management
  • advocacy to enhance access primary health care services.

Preventative team

This team focuses upon measures that stop or delay the uptake of alcohol and/or other drugs and protect against progression to more frequent or regular use amongst at risk populations.  The team works within a range of settings, including: communities, educational settings, licensed premises and surrounds, workplaces and organisations, social, cultural and sporting groups, and a range of government and non-government organisations. Key areas of focus include:

  • strengthening community action through partnerships and capacity building
  • supporting statewide social marketing
  • promoting healthy policy and legislation
  • developing personal skills of the population / community
  • creating supportive physical and social environments
  • raising awareness
  • advocating for alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention.


Interventions for the treatment of alcohol and drug presentations in adults fall into three main categories:


  • pharmacotherapy - opiate replacement therapies, nicotine replacement therapies, alcohol anticraving medications, nicotine anticraving medications, antipsychotics medications, antidepressants medications, anti-anxiety medications
  • detoxifications - medicated and symptomatic
  • medical investigations for possible other factors

  • solution focussed anxiety and stress management

  • sleep hygiene
