Registered Nurse Nicholas Delaney has joined QEII Hospital as inaugural Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) of the brand-new Ward 4A General Medicine Unit due to open in late November.
After launching his nursing career at the Mater NICCU as an AIN and EN, Nick gained his RN qualification and transitioned to PA Hospital’s surgical Ward 4D, working his way steadily up the ranks before taking on his first secondment as A/Clinical Nurse with the Vascular Access Surveillance Team.
In 2019, Nick diversified his experience again, securing a role as SNAP (Sub and Non-Acute Patient) Nurse Manager where he took every opportunity to grow his skillset.
“In the last two years, I’ve taken on a number of secondments at PAH, including Workforce Nurse Manager in the Division of Medicine, to Neurology OPD CNC, supporting the vaccination clinics at South Bank, and most recently backfilling the NUM position at PA’s Ward 2D,” he said.
Inspired by his experience and motivated by a longstanding career goal to be a full-time NUM, Nick welcomed the opportunity to apply for the role at QEII.
“Getting to a NUM level was always a career goal of mine, and when the position was advertised I thought it was an amazing opportunity to open a brand-new ward, because something like that very rarely comes around,” he said.
Nick brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles and says he looks forward to leading the nursing team at the new 28-bed ward.
“I like the idea of starting fresh, not only with an amazing new workspace, but with a whole new team of people from different areas all over the hospital. I like the idea that we can work as a team to make it our own and build our own culture. It’s new territory but it’s exciting,” he said.
“My 12-month goal is the success of this unit, both for our patients and our team. I want to make sure that as a team, we start as best as we can, and that we all work together to take on any challenges along the way. I’m ready for it.”
