Passionate consumer advocate and active member of the Metro South Consumer Panel, Phil Carswell OAM sadly passed away this week.

Phil’s professional life as the Manager of HIV/AIDS and Sexual Health in Queensland Health revolved around education and advocacy so it is fitting that his life’s quest would centre around consumer advocacy and influence in the health setting.

For his outstanding service to community health and the response to HIV/AIDS, Phil was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in June 2015.

As a patient of our kidney dialysis service and later a transplant recipient, Phil had a vested interest in advocating for this and many portfolio’s within our broader MSH service over the past five years.

His affiliations included:

  • President & founding member of the Victorian AIDS Council
  • Advocate for National Advisory Council on AIDS
  • Advocate for Kidney & Organ Transplantation
  • Consumer representation on the PAH COVID Incident Management Committee
  • Executive appointed Consumer Panel Member in Metro South Health which included MSH Executive Safety and Quality Committee (Standard 1), PAH Standard 2 Committee, and many MSH Strategic Projects

Phil’s tireless work in the consumer space earned him the MSH iCARE2 Values award winner for Engagement in 2022 and it is an undisputed fact that his wisdom, passion and dedication to health advocacy will be sorely missed. Vale Phil.
