PA Hospital’s Security Unit (SECU) Nursing is an exemplar model of care as the state’s only inpatient and outpatient service dedicated to inmates in need of emergent care.
The 12-bed unit provides a secure and safe environment within the grounds of a tertiary hospital to care for Queensland Corrective Services clients, with staff taking great pride in their jobs.
Nurse Unit Manager Suruj Noor said the relatively small team of 20 has a big focus on delivering social justice in healthcare.
“We provide inpatients, outpatients and dialysis services for clients throughout the state and are committed to providing high quality care, regardless of someone’s background,” she said.
“This is a very cohesive team where staff go above and beyond every day.
“As a small team we depend on creative ideas and collaboration to solve problems. We value our position as nurses to make a difference by advocating on behalf of our patients.”
The unit essentially operates as a ‘mini hospital,’ treating any and all kinds of emergency healthcare needs with security in the unit provided by Queensland Correctional Officers.
The diversity is embraced by staff alongside the unique challenges of the unit.
“We all strive to be experts in conflict resolution, and we focus on being optimistic, generous, and empathetic every day.
“All staff are valued equally regardless of their position, to ensure we have a strong sense of belonging,” said Ms Noor.
The SECU team was acknowledged with the PAH Staff Award for April for their excellent work, patient-centred approach to care, and their ability to demonstrate resilience and congruence in a unique and complex setting.
