The $5.8 million expansion of the High Dependency Haemodialysis Unit at the Princess Alexandra Hospital has reached an important milestone with the completion of Stage 1 of the project.

Patients moved into the new area on 12 December, taking advantage of the additional space and crisp new facilities offered by the Stage 1 renovation.

The Stage 2 expansion will increase access to high dependency kidney services for inpatients with three additional treatment spaces and will provide modern and refurbished facilities in the former HDDU space.

The increase in capacity and improved design will have a positive impact on patients requiring haemodialysis or plasma exchange who require this specialised treatment within the inpatient setting, many of whom are critically unwell and can spend a significant time undergoing treatment each day.

Princess Alexandra Hospital has been nationally recognised for its expertise in liver and kidney transplants as well as its tertiary management of patients with chronic kidney disease.

The hospital continues to play a critical role in delivering consultation, management, dialysis and transplant services to Queenslanders.

The expansion project is expected to be completed in early 2024.

The project is funded through the Accelerated Infrastructure Delivery Program as part of the Queensland Health Hospitals and Health Plan.
