Healthcare workers hit the pavement in Brisbane, showing up for a colourful display of compassion and kindness in the 2024 International Women's Day Fun Run.
The Child and Youth Mental Health Service team was among the sea of pink, which Senior Psychologist Peta-Anne Burns said was a special show of support for one of their own.
“We did the fun run last year because we have a colleague who went through breast cancer very recently.
“She joined us last year on the run and this year, fully recovered, asked if we were planning to do it again as she had so much fun with us all together. It’s obviously a fantastic cause and close to many of us, so it makes for a great team day,” she said.
The team put any competitiveness aside for the 5km run and say the real goal was about more than the physical finish line.
They also hosted a morning tea with raffles and merchandise to continue fundraising efforts.
“I think we were all so pleasantly surprised that so many people supported us in this way and were so generous with their donation,” said Peta-Anne.
“It is never the teams’ goal to make a big fundraising effort, but it is to have fun and to promote awareness of breast cancer research.
“Reaching over our goal made us all feel like we did contribute towards the bigger goal that the Mater Chicks in Pink event is about,” she said.
The team finished with an impressive fundraising effort, collecting nearly $3,000 to support women with breast cancer.
A huge congratulations to everyone who participated and donated towards this incredibly important cause.
