Eighteen fresh-faced interns are embarking on their medical careers at QEII Hospital this month after putting the hospital first on their preference list.
Embracing rotations across specialties including General Surgery, General Medicine, Gynaecology, Urology, Orthopaedics and Emergency Medicine, the diverse group are gearing up for a year of hands-on learning alongside QEII’s best.
Meet some of our 2025 cohort:
Dr Vicky
Jumping feet first into Emergency Medicine, Dr Vicky has big plans for her future and looks forward to combining clinical, teaching and research work into her career portfolio.
“Emergency is where you take on significant responsibility and really go hands-on. It’s a big step, but knowing that QEII has a great support system makes me feel confident,” she said.
Choosing QEII as her first preference, Vicky looks forward to the opportunities a smaller hospital provides.
“I wanted a place where I could build close relationships with the team, have lots of hands-on experience, and grow in a supportive environment. QEII is perfect for that.”
Dr Richard
For Dr Richard, the transition from medical school to practice in his chosen field of General Surgery marks an exciting new chapter after four years of medical school.
“There’s nothing quite like doing the day-to-day work: writing prescriptions, conducting reviews, and mastering the practice. General Surgery offers a real emphasis on clinic work, which is a definitive part of being a doctor. It’s also an opportunity to refine organisational skills by managing clinics and ward jobs simultaneously,” he said.
Having previously been a medical student at QEII, Richard’s decision to return was inspired by the hospital’s supportive culture and teaching opportunities.
“The ratio of junior staff to consultants here is excellent, offering more interaction and hands-on learning. It’s the perfect environment to build a strong foundation as an intern,” he added.
Dr Zaina
For Dr Zaina, hard-launching her career in Gynaecology is a dream come true.
“It’s one of the specialties I’m most interested in, and I’ve had a decent amount of experience during med school. It’s exciting to now be more hands-on and make a tangible difference in patient care,” she said.
Zaina says her choice of QEII was influenced by the hospital’s positive staff culture, and the availability of her desired specialty.
“Staff culture is important to me, and I heard good things about QEII so that was one of the main drawing factors to coming and working here,” she said.
Reflecting on her journey to medicine, she shared, “I was indecisive in high school and applied to medical school last minute, but over the years, I’ve come to truly love this profession. It turned out to be the perfect choice for me.”
Dr Punkaja
Starting his internship in General Medicine, Dr Punkaja is eager to get a taste for everything the field has to offer.
“I’m really happy that I get to start in General Medicine, because regardless of where you end up in the future, General Medicine forms the foundation for everything you tackle as a junior doctor,” he said.
“It’s been a long road to get here, and I’m really looking forward to getting some hands-on experience. When I looked into hospitals, QEII consistently came up as a great place to work. It’s a hidden gem, so I’m really happy to be here.”
QEII is proud to support each of our 18 new interns and we wish them every success as they launch their careers with us!
