The talent and passion of Dr Mary Boyde across her nursing career is limitless particularly when tabulating the roles she has held during her 35 years at Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Now retired, the Nurse Educator, Nursing Researcher, Adjunct Associate Professor, and Chair of the Metro South Human Research Ethics Committee has handed over the baton to the next generation of leaders in what will be a very exciting research landscape in the coming years.

Mary commenced as a Nurse Educator in 1989 teaching student nurses who were undertaking their hospital certification which then morphed into a degree program for nurses.

“I implemented the PA program for university nursing graduates to transition to their first year as RNs,” she said.

“As a Nurse Educator, I assisted with the development and implementation of the new Bachelor of Nursing program through the School of Nursing and Midwifery at University of Queensland (UQ) which commenced in 2004.”

Mary completed her PhD in 2011 and started working as a Nurse Researcher with the Heart Recovery Service in Cardiology at PAH, while continuing her work with UQ as an Adjunct Associate Professor supervising PhD students and conducting research.

“My areas of research have focused on patient education, health literacy and nurse-led interventions to improve patient outcomes and reduce readmissions,” said the passionate advocate who also chaired the PAH Health Literacy Working Group for many years.

“While working at PA, I have had some amazing opportunities to undertake different roles and to contribute to nursing education and research while collaborating with many amazing health care professionals,” Mary said.

Mary joined the Metro South Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) in 2011 and was appointed as the Deputy Chair in 2019. She undertook the role of Chair of the Committee from 2021 to 2024.

Mary, thank you for your wisdom, your consistency, bestowing your logic and your passion on Cardiology patients as well as inspiring the nursing journey of so many new nurses to enter the field through their university education.

Congratulations to the new Chair of the MSH HREC, Sonia Hancock.
