People living with spinal cord injury are benefitting from a fleet of new equipment which has arrived at Queensland’s only specialist spinal injuries rehabilitation unit.

PA Hospital staff and patients alike are particularly excited about the ‘TyroMotion Lexo’ machine and its ability to help patients reach optimal levels of function and independence.

The robotic set-up allows for a simulated walking experience, which Physiotherapist Melissa Hay says has a variety of benefits for those receiving care in the Spinal Injuries Unit (SIU).

“The TyroMotion Lexo is a device that enables a therapist to safely and effectively support neurological patients in gait training,” she said.

“This improves their strength, circulation, muscle tone, functional movement, and independence, while also enhancing cardiovascular fitness and minimising falls risk.

“It allows a patient to complete the maximum number of steps and intensity, with easy handling and quick set up.”

The machine arrived in August and has already been well received by patients.

“The feedback we’ve had from patients and their families is extremely positive which is reassuring to hear, because at the end of the day we’re here to provide the best possible care,” said Melissa.

The physiotherapy team also received a HUR resistance machine and NuStep earlier this year as part of the Queensland Spinal Cord Injuries Service (QSCIS) Enhancement Project.
