Patients, families, staff, and peer support workers celebrated the opening of the newly renovated deck of the Spinal Injuries Unit in March as the first completed infrastructure component of the QSCIS Enhancement Program.

Hosted on 19 March, the event drew a crowd of invested members of the project team who have worked consistently with consumer representatives and staff to ensure timely delivery of the project and a host of inclusions to improve the comfort and versatility of the space.

The improved deck benefits from:

  • Blinds to offer protection from the weather on the northern aspect with an auto retractable safety feature which is employed if the wind picks up.
  • Painted and refreshed surfaces
  • Greater interaction between the facilities and the nearby garden spaces
  • New furniture that is easier and safer to use for patients with a variety of chair types and their families.

Division Director of Allied Health and Rehabilitation, Julie Argus highlighted the work of many across the various aspects of the QSCIS Enhancement Project at this first deliverable.

“The completion of the refurbished deck is our first milestone for the project that has come from the valuable feedback of consumer representatives and former patients as a priority for improvement,” she said.

“It was also a necessary step towards the next construction stage in the dining room as it enables us to host communal dining here while the dining room is under renovation.”

Peer Support Worker Tim McCallum hosted entertainment at the opening event and of course, there was cake!

Thanks to Tracey from Health Infrastructure Queensland for coming along to celebrate the project milestone and consumer rep, Lindsay Nott for his advocacy in the User Group.
