In February 2024, the Specialty Outpatients Department (SOPD) at PA Hospital underwent a significant expansion under the leadership of Nurse Unit Manager Schonnel Gosson.
One year later, the department has surpassed expectations, servicing 46,220 outpatient occasions of Service (OOS), a major leap from the 28,000–30,000 OOS previously provided annually. This growth represents an average of 906 patients per week, a significant increase from 600.
“We’re thrilled to share that we’ve serviced over 46,000 patients in our first year, which is a huge achievement for everyone involved,” Schonnel said.
She credits much of the success to the teamwork across the department, including the pivotal role of Karen Brazil, the Office Manager who ensured smooth operations and helped coordinate efforts across teams.
The expansion wasn't just about increasing capacity—it also focused on enhancing patient care. New facilities have made a noticeable difference, with patients expressing increased comfort in the redesigned space.
Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many patients noting the calm welcoming atmosphere and improvements in treatment times and flow.
The expanded department has also alleviated pressure on other areas of the hospital by creating additional space in outpatient services.
“By easing pressure across various areas, we’re able to improve efficiency and provide faster care to patients,” Schonnel said.
The impact on staff has been equally positive. With a focus on professional growth, the department has provided more learning and career development opportunities.
“From the medical teams to admin, everyone came together to make this work,” Schonnel said, highlighting the collaborative culture that helped drive the success of the expansion.
“We’re always looking at ways to make things more effective, adapting to meet the needs of our patients and staff,” she said.
With a dedicated team and a clear focus on patient care, the department is excited for the next chapter in its journey.
