Adorable alpacas, fantastic food trucks and creative costumes lit up Princess Alexandra Hospital as teams across the campus went all-out to celebrate R U OK? Day on 14 September.

Staff got creative with this year’s theme, I’m here to hear by coordinating events and creating spaces to encourage meaningful and open conversations about mental health.

Staff came from far and wide to attend the main event at the RSA courtyard, where food trucks Benz on Miller and Jimbo’s Delights were a huge hit, selling everything from delectable burgers and loaded fries to sweet treats and bubble tea. Volunteer musician Joe Watts graced crowds with melodic tunes throughout the event.

Between bites, staff took the opportunity to start a wellbeing conversation with their colleagues and engage with the R U OK? Day pop-up wall, sharing the things they are grateful for, as well as tips on checking in with loved ones.

The stars of the show were Pixie and Shadow, the VIAs (Very Important Alpacas) who stole the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have a pat and a selfie with the furry pair.

Teams across campus also organised a number of team meet-ups over morning and afternoon tea, with matching T-shirts and conversations with colleagues. Kudos to the Emergency Department for their impressive all-yellow spread with complementary balloons and costumes leaving a trail of sunshine throughout the ED.

A/Executive Director of Addiction and Mental Health Services, Linda Hipper emphasised the importance of addressing mental health concerns promptly.

"Mental health is as crucial as physical health, and it is essential that we prioritise both and check on those around us.

“Often mental health and substance use concerns go hand-in-hand and starting a conversation can be the first step in helping people feel less alone.

“RU OK? Day provides an opportunity for us to support one another and fostering a culture of compassion and understanding,” she said.

A big thanks to all staff, volunteers, families and patients who made the PA events such a success.
