A new $20 million rapid expansion ward has opened at Logan Hospital to provide better care for people who need to stay in hospital a little longer.

The subacute ward – known as ‘Ward 2Q’ – provides an additional 28 new beds in a modern, comfortable environment.

The modular building was manufactured locally at Ormeau and then craned into place on the hospital site, with construction taking just over six months.

The ward is part of the Queensland Government’s $1 billion-plus investment in the hospital to provide significantly increased capacity and modern facilities for the growing Logan community.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Shannon Fentiman said Ward 2Q featured a mix of single and shared rooms.

"Sometimes people need to stay a little longer in hospital for a variety of reasons – this could be related to disability, rehabilitation needs or other complex social factors," the Minister said.

"Ward 2Q has an innovative model designed to provide care and rehabilitation in a comfortable environment, while helping the most vulnerable patients transition safely back into the community.

"It will go a long way to providing the best possible healthcare experience for these patients, with amenities to promote patient rehabilitation including a common room and outdoor courtyard with sensory garden.

"And it will have the added benefit of freeing up acute beds for people with more urgent medical conditions, easing pressure on the hospital’s emergency department."

The modular building also provides a second level with space for hospital administrative support staff.

It was manufactured locally at Hutchinson Builders’ Ormeau facility and was then craned into place on the hospital site – with construction supporting around 95 jobs.

The exterior façade of the building includes a bespoke artwork by local First Nations artist Jessica Skeen-Muralappi titled Improving the road to recovery.

The piece represents the different communities and family groups who call Logan home and the connections that bring people together – and the role of Logan Hospital during so many significant events in peoples’ lives.

Jessica was born and raised in Logan City and is a descendant of the Burri Gubba and Kuku Thaypan people of North Queensland.

The Queensland Government’s record investment in Logan Hospital includes:

  • $460 million for the Stage 1 Expansion Project delivering 206 beds and treatment spaces – several areas already open and the remainder under construction
  • $530 million for the Stage 2 Expansion Project delivering 112 beds and more operating theatres – currently in design
  • $18.8 million for the refurbishment of the hospital’s Maternity Service – inpatient ward and birthing suites open and the remainder under construction
  • $20 million for a new 28-bed modular ward – open
  • $61.92 million for a new multi-level car park – opened in early 2022
  • $9 million for the hospital’s first 28-bed modular ward – opened in early 2020.
