Despite his scary creation, Lachlan was all smiles when he was crowned the winner of the most recent Mozzie Monster competition!

The Mozzie Monsters are part of the Zika Mozzie Seeker project where community members partner with the Metro South Public Health Unit to ensure our region has not been invaded by ‘Zika mozzies’.

Lachlan said the idea of designing a spooky monster was a fun challenge and he really enjoyed colouring it in.

“Colouring is an interest that Lachlan has really taken to in the last couple of months and I am keen to encourage him to bring out his creativity,” Lachlan’s mum, Sharon, said.

“The competition for designing the Mozzie Monster initially captured my interest when scrolling through Facebook posts,” Sharon added.

“When I read into it further and realised how easy it was to participate, we signed up straight away.”

Lachlan said he was so happy when he found out he had won the competition!

“It was great recognition for Lachlan, and I felt proud of him and his work,” Sharon said.

For taking out the win, Lachlan received his own portable microscope and is looking forward to exploring the tiny world of ants with his prize.

“It’s his first scientific instrument and there will be lots he can learn using it,” Sharon said.

This is the second time the family have participated in the Zika Mozzie Seeker project.

“Mosquitoes are quite prevalent in our area, so we are definitely keen to participate in future instalments of this project or similar projects too.

“The Mozzie Monster competition made it very easy to be part of and contribute to this important research.

“Thanks for encouraging kids to get involved in science projects!”
