The holiday period can be a time of joy and festivity, but it can also lead to feelings of loneliness, grief, financial strain, or emotional stress, which is why PA Hospital staff are encouraging people to take time for their own wellbeing and check in on their loved ones.

“The greatest gift you can give is to reach out,” said Chrislyne from Grevillea Unit.

“There’s a lot of pressure to make this a jolly time but it gets very busy with all the obligations with friends, family and colleagues.

“It can be difficult to acknowledge these challenges but it’s important to remember you are not a burden and it’s okay to ask for help. Fostering connection is key,” she said.

Whether it’s through shared meals, heartfelt conversations, or simply spending time together, nurturing relationships can uplift spirits. For those without close networks, community events or reaching out to neighbours can create meaningful interactions.

Christmas is also a special opportunity to practice kindness and generosity, which have profound impacts on both the giver and receiver.

Simple acts such as writing a thoughtful note, volunteering, or supporting someone in need can brighten someone’s day.

In PAH’s Grevillea Unit there will be a big focus on belonging, explains Recreation Officer Andria.

“We have decorations, volunteer musicians, carols, and on Christmas day there will be a special lunch, and gifts for our patients thanks to our Social Inclusion team, the Grevillea staff, Grevillea families and our Nurse Unit Manager Debra.

“We try and make it as friendly and homely as we can for those who are in hospital for the holidays,” she said.

If anyone is struggling this Christmas remember to take small steps, acknowledge your feelings, set realistic expectations, and focus on moments of gratitude. Similarly, be attentive to those around you who may need support.

Embrace the true spirit of the season – kindness and connection. Together, we can foster a supportive community to ensure no one feels alone.
