The newly opened Crisis Support Space at Redland Hospital is improving care for people in mental health crisis, by moving them out of the hospital's Emergency Department and into a nicer, more homely environment.

Acting Team Leader of the Crisis Support Space Stacey Harvey said the space offered a stark contrast to the busy atmosphere of an emergency department.

"Patients no longer have to spend extended periods in the Emergency Department.

“Where it’s appropriate, they can be referred to a beautiful, comfortable space designed specifically for their needs," Ms Harvey said.

The Crisis Support Space includes areas for relaxation, lounges, comfortable seating and kitchen facilities to make a cup of tea.

These features contribute to a calming atmosphere that helps people manage their immediate crises more effectively.

"For some people, simply sitting in a quiet lounge and having a chat and a cup of tea can make a huge difference.

“Others may benefit from a conversation with one of our peer workers, who have lived experience and can offer support," Ms Harvey explained.

The facility also helps to link consumers to ongoing support by connecting them with community services and healthcare providers, ensuring continuity of care beyond their initial visit.

"We can make referrals to various community services or our own healthcare services for follow-up.

“This approach helps patients continue their recovery journey.”

Located at the front of the Redland Hospital campus along Weippin Street, the facility operates from 2:30 pm to 8:30 pm, Wednesday to Sunday.
