With a record number of nominations and wins in last month’s staff awards, Logan’s psychology team are not just talking the talk when it comes to 'Our Values'.
Five psychologists were nominated across the Engagement, Accountability, Respect and Excellence categories with a further whole of team nomination for their work in partnering with consumers.
Clinical Psychologist and Engagement Award winner Marilia Libera, who has been leading the team since July 2023, said she believed they were all motivated by a common goal – person centred care.
“My favourite part of the job is focusing on patient centred care, advocating for it, influencing change where I can, and working in a team of wonderful people,” Marilia said.
The humble winner said she demonstrated engagement in her role by active listening and responding with empathy to any issue brought to her attention.
“I keep an open-door policy, communicate transparently and encourage everyone to have a voice,” she said.
Though Marilia modestly discussed her impact within in the team, her nomination highlighted the extraordinary clinical and interpersonal skills she possessed, noting a palpable positive change in the air when she was near.
Senior Clinical Psychologist and Excellence Award winner Jessica Hampton was equally reluctant to be in the spotlight but her work in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) deserves to be celebrated.
In a progressive move, Jessica recently initiated psychology in the ICU, something she said had become her biggest achievement since starting at Logan Hospital four years ago.
"With 20 to 40 per cent of critically ill patients developing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress, the role of the psychologist is needed but is yet to be widely integrated in Australian ICUs,” Jessica said.
“I am excited to continue establishing this role in the Logan ICU, where the team has been nothing but enthusiastic and supportive.”
Through the new initiative, Jessica has commenced a PhD and continues to work toward enhancing patient care through a multidisciplinary approach.
“A hospital admission can be incredibly stressful and disruptive for patients and their families, and I find it deeply rewarding to offer psychological care that helps them feel empowered to face their health challenges.”
Other team members recognised for their display of our values were Joshua Jacobs who received Highly Commended in the Respect category and Michelle Grover who won the Accountability Award.
Michelle’s nomination stated her passion and effectiveness in her role enhanced patient care and promoted a culture of accountability within the hospital.
Fantastic work Psychology team. Thank you for providing a wonderful example of living 'Our Values'.
