Baby Danielle sleeps peacefully in her bassinet in Logan Hospital's Neonatal Unit, a small fabric love heart tucked beside her.

The ‘Cuddle Heart’ carries the unique scent of her mother Susana, and is a small but important tool providing comfort and connection when the pair can’t be together.

Neonatal Lactation Consultant Kylie Peach explained the hearts played a vital role in the bonding of mothers and their newborns who could not physically be together.

“The idea behind the hearts is simple,” she said. “New mothers are given a set of three Cuddle Hearts: one for mum, one for baby and one for the wash.

“One heart stays with the mother, while the other is placed with the baby in the Neonatal Unit. The mother is encouraged to hold one heart against their skin to absorb their scent.

“Over time the hearts are swapped so that each carries the comforting scent of the other.”

Kylie also said the hearts helped parents feel reassured that a part of them was always close to their baby.

The ‘Cuddle Heart’ initiative wouldn’t be possible without the help of the local community and the unit is now calling on sewing enthusiasts to help replenish its stash.

If you can help, you’re encouraged to download the pattern and instructions.

“Until the end of October, we are asking the community to deliver completed hearts to the main reception at Logan Hospital.”

After this date, drop-offs can be arranged by contacting the Neonatal Unit.
