Calming music and sighs of relaxation can be heard coming from PA Hospital’s Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit (BIRU) as patients soak up the physical and mental benefits of yoga.

The weekly classes are specially curated by yoga instructor and volunteer Lizzie Ambrose who shares a special connection with those in the unit.

“I’d had a brain injury and I just know what that experience can be like and how isolating it can feel so I thought this was an amazing opportunity to give back,” she said.

“The group program started with a sequence of yoga moves, and it’s since expanded to include sound and guided breathing. A lot of people say it helps them stay calm while improving their overall mood.”

For past-patient Brendan, it made a big difference after being diagnosed with a sudden and serious onset of multiple sclerosis in 2023.

“I spent some time in PA Hospital before coming to BIRU and I loved the yoga classes during my three months of rehabilitation,” he said.

“I’d never done yoga before, but I always made sure to come because it was relaxing.

“There was a lot I could do and a lot I couldn’t do, but Lizzie always gave alternatives so everyone could join in.”

The positive impacts of the class are also felt by staff.

“On Monday afternoon patients tend to just feel a little bit more at ease,” said BIRU Advanced Recreation Officer Michelle Wirth.

“Even patients who participate very passively will still come week after week and just listen. Lizzie is perfect at reading how people are feeling on the day and modifying the moves to suit.

“She tells people to do what they can for the body they’re in today, which really allows patients permission to be kind to themselves.

“Lizzie gives her time, skill and energy with generosity which is such a gift.”

The successful yoga program is being celebrated during Brain Injury Awareness Week from 19 – 25 August 2024 with 1 in 45 Australians living with a brain injury.

Thank you to Lizzie and our dedicated staff in BIRU who display incredible kindness and compassion for patients at PAH.
