Local Member for Toohey Mr Peter Russo and Member for Mansfield Ms Corinne McMillan joined hospital staff and patients to officially cut the ribbon opening the new 28-bed ward at QEII Hospital today.
QEII’s most contemporary ward opened to patients on 27 November 2023 expanding the capacity of the hospital to manage emergency admissions for general medical patients.
Constructing the new ward within the main building of the hospital gives ready access to existing infrastructure and ensures efficiencies can be shared for the benefit of patient flow.
The new ward boosts hospital capacity within the fast-growing Metro South region to enhance access to healthcare for local residents.
Metro South Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive, Noelle Cridland said the population continues to grow and age with more people presenting with complex health issues than ever before.
“This ward ensures QEII Hospital has extra capacity to manage the growing demand for general medical services in the Metro South region.
“This new infrastructure is giving residents better access to healthcare, closer to home and we are proud to continue delivering high quality, person-centred care to patients,” she said.
The Queensland Government announced in 2022 that QEII Hospital would be a key part of the Queensland Health and Hospitals Plan which is the largest investment in new hospitals and new beds in the state’s history.
The Accelerated Infrastructure Delivery Project underway at QEII includes the Ward 4A refurbishment, new Allied Health/Ambulatory Care Unit (AACU) building which is currently under construction, and refurbishment of the existing Medical Records demountable.
