Members of QEII’s Elective Surgery Access Team (ESAT) - Urology are celebrating after winning Team of the Year at the QEII Hospital 2023 International Nurses Day Awards.

The team’s cohesive culture within ESAT, and their aptitude for working effectively as a multifaceted team, were cited as their distinguishing strengths.

Nurse Mike Cygan, who’s been a member of the ESAT for the past three years, says his greatest joy at work is reassuring patients through the elective surgery waitlisting process, and working closely with them to manage any potential barriers that could impact their treatment dates or surgeries.

“Our role is to coordinate the patients through the elective surgery waitlist, so that they can get their operations or procedures completed on-time.

“The benefit to the patient is that they can be treated in line with the relevant guidelines that underwrite the performance of the department. Essentially, we're looking to have patients treated in a timely manner, and an appropriate manner.”

The success of ESAT is their ability to achieve high standards in patient elective surgery wait list management and elective surgery patient treatment.

Mike and his team look forward to treating more patients as the service continues to grow.

“As the hospital and health service grows along with that, the opportunity to treat more patients and to provide more care across a broader cohort would be one of the goals.”

Congratulations to the Elective Surgery Access Team on this achievement.
