When it comes to his work, Assistant in Nursing at QEII’s Central Sterilizing Department (CSD), Manu Joseph prides himself on upholding only the highest of standards.

With 18 years of experience under his cap, Manu says his passion for his specialty still runs strong.

“I’m 100 per cent satisfied in this role. I like the flow of the work from start-to-finish because there’s a very clear process and there are no shortcuts.

“We’re a big part of the infection control workflow, so it’s really important to get our job right the first time. There’s no room for mistakes or the case is cancelled,” he said.

After launching his career at Auckland City Hospital in New Zealand, Manu made the move to QEII, where he has thrived for the last seven years practising his specialty and mentoring new trainees.

“We train three or four students, graduates and nurses each month. We show them how everything works and why our role is so important for infection control. The CSD is really the heart of the hospital,” he said.

Manu's 18-year dedication to uncompromising standards and training the next generation of specialists saw him claim the 2023 QEII International Nurses Day Integrity Award earlier this year.

Accustomed to working behind-the-scenes, Manu says the award was a surprise and an honour.

“Integrity and honesty are central to everything I do in my work, and it means a lot to me and my career to exemplify that through my work every day,” he said.

"It's great to be recognised when you’re in a non-direct care role and working behind the scenes.”

After seven years at the hospital, Manu is proud to represent the QEII CSD team and credits the team’s supportive culture for their success.

“It’s a great team because everybody helps each other, especially when we have new students,” he said.

Congratulations Manu, and thank you for your ongoing commitment to the CSD.
