This year we celebrate four decades of the handy-work of Ian Patane, Trade Coordinator at Metro South Health.

Ian's journey began in 1985 when he first entered the trades as an apprentice carpenter.

"I knew from grade 11 that carpentry was the path for me," says Ian.

"I was good at woodwork, metalwork, and technical drawing in school, so it felt like a natural fit."

Ian’s career spans multiple phases of Metro South Health’s evolution, including changes to the organisational structure, and a shift from individual facilities to a more integrated health network.

Ian says a memorable career moment for him was during the move from the old main building into the current main building of PA Hospital.

“This was the most exciting time. The logistics needed for the whole hospital to move each ward into the new, seemed overwhelming, and not just for our department.  As you can imagine it would be up to us to hang anything required to be installed so the pressure was on at that time.”

“From the time we moved in until now our department has never stopped being called on to continue the daily maintenance and repairs.”

What stands out most for Ian, though, is the relationships he's built over the years.

"It's like a family here at PAH," he shares.

"The team is always there for each other, and that's what's kept me going for so long."

Despite shifts in the workforce and the modernising of roles, Ian believes it’s the people who truly make Metro South Health what it is.

"Even with all the changes, the camaraderie is something that has remained constant."

Throughout his career, Ian has had the privilege of working with a wide range of colleagues, including some memorable mentors. One standout moment for him was the opportunity to complete his apprenticeship under the guidance of a World War II veteran, who imparted skills that Ian still uses today, even for home projects.

"It’s a role that keeps me busy, but I enjoy it. There’s always something to do, whether it's managing the locking system or coordinating permits for contractors, and our staff " Ian says.

"I get to interact with a lot of people and help get things done, and that keeps me coming back every day."

As for the future of Metro South Health, Ian is optimistic.

"The team is in good hands," he says, citing the new generation of workers who are coming up through the ranks.

"It’s been a privilege to be part of such a supportive environment. I wouldn’t trade these 40 years for anything."

Ian’s legacy at Metro South Health is a testament to his professionalism, dedication, and the strong bonds he’s built with his colleagues. Here's to chipping away at the next career milestone!
