Reshaping perceptions of dementia was the focus of a recent educational and fundraising event held at Redland Residential Care to mark Dementia Action Week.
The spotlight was on the Acacia unit, as they showcased their dedication to fostering a dementia-friendly environment within the facility.
Community and Oral Health Services work collaboratively to provide integrated care to dementia patients across home and residential care environments.
Nurse Practitioner Jayne Ashcroft said her Dementia Outreach Service (DEMOS) team worked alongside staff at Redland Residential Care to create ‘corridors of knowledge’ with dementia facts and myth busting.
“We are truly grateful to have such an engaging workforce that supports our residents in any way they can,” she said.
“A fun filled day was held onsite with a cupcake stall and a “Guess the Number of Jelly Beans” competition, raising funds to purchase a ‘vegetable pod’ for our residents.”
Acacia Ward Nurse Unit Manager Daniel Carlyle and his team worked to support patients to live the best life they can, while living with dementia.
“We want to support our most vulnerable residents to improve their quality of life,” he said.
“An edible garden will provide our patients with sensory stimulation through sight, touch, smell, and taste.
“Feeling the soil, observing the colours of plants, and experiencing various scents can be invigorating for individuals with dementia.”
