Poppy Jeffrey is one of six Undergraduate Students in Nursing (USiNS) gaining hands-on experience at Beaudesert Hospital.
As part of the hospital’s first-ever USiN cohort, Poppy and her peers have provided valuable support to patients and staff in the Emergency Department since their placement began earlier this year.
The second-year university student said she applied for the placement with her friend Ellie Tranter - a Beaudesert local - and they were thrilled to both be accepted.
At just 22-years-old, Poppy ‘fell into’ nursing, after discovering a passion for caring for children with disabilities.
Poppy said working in the Beaudesert Hospital ED had only strengthened her love of helping others.
“I love the fast-paced environment of the ED. I’ve been exposed to so much and I’m learning so much,” Poppy said. “I also love how community-driven this hospital is.”
Acting NUM Emergency Department Dianne Conlon said the addition of the USiNS had assisted with patient flow and provided valuable support to her nursing team.
“They round on patients frequently, take observations, provide food and fluids as required, communicate with the patients that are waiting and assist the nursing team to coordinate patient centred care,” she said.
The USiNS are due to finish their placement in December this year, but Poppy has already secured another contract with the hospital.
Poppy said she has high hopes for her career, whether that means returning to the disability field with a master’s in occupational therapy or working with children.
We wish her all the best in her journey!
