The Bayside Community Care Unit (CCU) is a community-based facility which helps people recovering from mental health illness to develop life skills that will assist them to successfully return to living in the community.
Clinical Nurse Luning Wang says the Community Care Unit operates an integrated approach involving clinicians and peer support workers.
"Our work at the CCU goes beyond providing medication and ensuring safety.
"We engage closely with residents through therapeutic groups, individual therapy sessions, and functional support to help them achieve personal recovery.
"Our residents are having plenty of opportunities and time to regain independently living skills, and expand their social engagements in the community," she said.
With nearly 18 years of experience in mental health nursing, Luning has seen significant advancements in the field, particularly the valuable inclusion of peer support workers.
"Mental health nursing has shifted towards helping with consumers towards their personal recovery.
"The best part of my job is being part of the recovery journey and witnessing positive changes in our residents' lives."
Earlier this year Luning was honoured when Metro South Health Directorate of the Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery hosted a celebration breakfast, commemorating International Nurses Day and International Day of the Midwife.
The event celebrated nurses and midwives across the various directorates of Metro South Health.
"Being recognised by my team fuels my sense of pride and appreciation," she said.
"It's fuel for the human soul."
