What our volunteers do

Our volunteers support our visitors, patients and our staff and do things like:

  • welcoming patients and visitors and help them find their way around the hospital
  • helping patients who arrive for clinical appointments
  • spending time and doing fun activities with patients while they are in hospital
  • helping patients during mealtimes
  • tending to fresh flowers in patient rooms and wards
  • taking a selection of books and activities from our free library to patient's rooms
  • supporting emergency department patients, visitors and staff
  • helping with routine office requests
  • playing live music in our public spaces.

Who can apply

We welcome people of all abilities and cultural backgrounds to join our volunteer team, however you must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • provide references
  • agree to a criminal history check.

You will also be required to be vaccinated against measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), whooping cough (pertussis) and chicken pox (varicella). We can help you get vaccinated before you start if you need to.

How volunteering works

Our service hours are 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday. Shifts are 3.5 to 4 hours long however we can be flexible.

If your shift is 4 hours or longer you'll get a meal voucher for the QEII kiosk.

We'll give you 2 trial shifts. If you choose to continue, we'll give you a permanent volunteer role. We ask that you commit to at least one shift per week as a permanent volunteer for the first 3 months. After this we can talk about your experience. If you choose to continue, you can ask for extra shifts.

How to apply

Complete and submit the volunteer application form.

Once received, we will be in touch to talk about your application and the volunteer roles we have.

Before you start

Before you start, we will do your criminal history and reference checks. We will need your written consent and proof of identity documents, such as your driver's licence, passport, proof of age card or Medicare card to do these.

We will give you orientation and training for the role you will be doing.
